A Dedicated Charger Makes Home Charging Easier
A standard power point will do for the odd top-up, but it’s slow. A dedicated EV charger is faster and more convenient, and it lets you schedule charging for the cheaper times on your electricity plan. Plug in as soon as you’re home and set a start time. The car won’t draw power until then.
We won’t recommend a charger sight unseen. First we look at your switchboard, whether you’re on single or three phase power, and the charging rate your car takes. The charger we suggest comes out of that.
Solar panels aren’t a must for a home charger to be worth it. If you’ve already got solar or a battery, though, we’ll set the three up to work together. Solar, batteries and energy management are part of what we do, so the charger gets planned around how and when your place actually uses power.
Why Install a Home EV Charger?
Cheaper Overnight Charging
Plug in when you get home and the charger holds off until the cheaper rate kicks in. By morning you’ve got the range you need, without a trip to a public charger.
Faster Home Charging
A wall-mounted charger delivers more power than a standard power point. How much faster depends on your car and your property’s electrical capacity.
A Dedicated Charging Circuit
The charger gets its own circuit, wired for the job, so it isn’t sharing a power point with the kettle and the washing machine.
Charging on Your Terms
Pick your charging hours in the app and check how much power the car has used. You can also have it charge when power is cheaper, or when your panels are producing more than the house is using.
Solar Integration Options
Already have solar panels? The right charger can use surplus solar when your car is at home during the day.
Ready for a Second EV
We’ll plan the setup around the car you drive now, the one you might buy next, and what your property’s power supply can handle.
Which EV Charger Is Right for You?
EV chargers come in different power levels and setups. The right one depends on your car, how far you drive each day, how long the car is parked at home and the power supply at your property.
How long a charge takes comes down to five things: the size of your car’s battery, how much charge is already in it, the fastest rate your car can accept, your property’s electrical supply and the charger itself.
Home chargers, including portable ones, use AC power, and the car converts it to charge the battery. DC chargers feed the battery directly at much higher power, which is why they’re mostly found at public and commercial sites.
The times below are a guide for adding about 30 kWh, which is roughly 170–200 km of driving in a typical EV. A full charge takes longer. For example, a 70 kWh battery takes around 10 hours on a 7.4 kW charger.
| Charger | Power supply | Time to add about 30 kWh | What you should know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard power point (portable charger) | Single phase, general-purpose outlet | Around 13–20 hours (at about 1.5–2.3 kW) | The slowest option. Fine for occasional top-ups, but the outlet and circuit need to be suitable for a long, continuous load. |
| 7.4 kW single-phase AC charger | Single phase | Around 4–5 hours | The most popular home charger. Suits many homes and most EVs, and adds roughly 40–50 km of range per hour. |
| 11 kW three-phase AC charger | Three phase | Around 3 hours | A good fit if your home already has three-phase power and your car accepts 11 kW on AC. |
| 22 kW three-phase AC charger | Three phase, with enough spare capacity | Around 1.5–2 hours, with a car that supports it | Only worth it if your car can actually take 22 kW on AC. Plenty of EVs top out at 7.4 or 11 kW, so check yours first, or you could end up paying for speed the car can’t use. |
| DC fast charger | Commercial-grade supply | Much faster; depends on the site and the car | You’ll mostly see these at public charging sites, business premises and fleet depots. They draw a lot more power, so the site’s electrical setup needs a closer look before we’d quote one. |
Think of these times as a ballpark. In practice a bit of energy gets lost along the way, the car or your supply may cap the charging rate, and no two cars charge in exactly the same way. So expect real times to run a little over.
Save Money With Smart Overnight EV Charging
Many Perth EV owners who drive to work charge at home overnight. It’s the simplest routine: the car is parked at home anyway, and it’s ready by morning.
Some Synergy electricity plans charge less for power used during set hours. A smart EV charger can be programmed to start and stop at the times you choose, so the car charges in those cheaper windows. And none of this needs solar panels.
What works out cheapest for you comes down to your household’s usage, the tariff you’re on and any solar or battery you’ve already got. One thing to watch: a time-of-use plan that’s cheaper at night can cost more at other times of the day. That’s why it’s worth looking at your whole home’s power use before switching, not just the car’s. We usually recommend reviewing your Synergy plan when you install a charger, to see whether a time-of-use tariff would actually lower your overall charging costs.
How Smart Overnight Charging Works
Plug In When You Get Home
Connect the car when you arrive, even if you don’t want it to start charging straight away.
Set Your Charging Schedule
Use the charger’s scheduling settings or your car’s own controls to choose when charging starts.
Charge During Lower-Cost Times
The car charges in the hours you’ve picked, as long as your plan, charger and settings support it.
Start the Day Ready to Go
Unplug in the morning with the range you need for the day.
Note: Synergy and other retailers update their plans, rates, time windows and eligibility rules now and then. Check the current details with your retailer before you change plans.
Solar EV Charging – When Does It Make Sense?
Charging from your own solar makes the most sense if your car spends the day parked at home. A smart charger that supports it can send surplus solar into the car, rather than exporting it to the grid.
If you drive to work in the morning and get home in the evening, there may not be enough solar left when you actually need to charge. In that case, charging overnight on a suitable off-peak rate usually makes more sense. Your solar panels and battery keep covering the house, while the car charges in the cheaper hours.
We’ll look at when your car is home, how much solar you generate and what tariff you’re on, then recommend one of the three setups below.
Day time Solar Charging
Best if your car is at home during the day and can charge from solar as it’s generated.
Charging Overnight
Suits commuters: the car’s gone all day and back in the driveway at night. It works best on a plan with a suitable off-peak rate.
A Mix of Both
Best for households that can use surplus solar when it’s there and switch to scheduled grid charging at other times.
Can a Home Battery Charge Your EV?
A home battery and an EV battery are very different sizes. An electric car may have a battery of around 70 kWh, while many home battery systems have much less usable storage.
That’s why using a home battery to fully recharge a car is often impractical. It would run the battery down quickly, leave little for the house, and may not be the cheapest way to charge anyway.
Our usual advice is simple. Let your solar and battery manage your household energy costs, and charge the car overnight on a suitable off-peak rate. With smart energy management, solar, battery storage and EV charging can still work together, deciding where your solar goes first. The battery just isn’t there to fill the car.
Home EV Charger Installation Perth
With a charger at home, the car charges where it’s parked every night. Most days, you won’t go near a public charger.
We’ll check your electrical supply and talk you through the chargers that suit your car. If you’d like overnight scheduling or solar charging, we set that up as part of the install.
Our residential services include:
- Home EV charger supply and installation
- Help choosing the right charger for your car
- Off-peak overnight charging setup
- Single-phase and three-phase charging options
- Smart charging and scheduling

Commercial EV Charger Installation Perth
EV charging for workplaces, customer car parks and fleets, planned around your site’s power supply.
A business site takes more planning than a single home charger. We look at your electrical capacity, how many vehicles will charge and when, then design and install the right number and type of chargers.
Our commercial services include:
- Workplace EV charging
- Employee and visitor charging
- Fleet charging
- Multiple charger installations
- Load management
- Solar integration and energy management
- Electrical infrastructure assessments
With several chargers on one site, load management shares the available electrical capacity between vehicles. That way you don’t need enough supply to run every charger at full output at the same time.
Bidirectional EV Charging – Can Your Car Power Your Home?
Some electric cars and chargers can move power both ways: into the car’s battery and back out of it. That means the energy stored in your car can be used for more than driving.
This matters because an EV battery is often several times larger than a typical home battery. With the right car and charger, it could potentially work as a large energy store for your home.
The catch is that only some EVs can do it. Your car has to be approved for it by the manufacturer. On top of that, you’ll need a charger designed for two-way power, and the installation has to meet electrical and network rules.
Vehicle-to-Load (V2L)
Plug appliances or equipment straight into the car, either through its onboard outlet or an approved adaptor.
Vehicle-to-Home (V2H)
Sends power from a supported EV into your home’s wiring, via a bidirectional charger.
Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G)
The car and charger send power back into the electricity network. This only happens where the technical and network requirements are met.
Is Bidirectional Charging Right for You?
First question: does your car support it? If not, there’s no point going further. If it does, the next things to look at are the charger, the installation, your power supply and whether the numbers stack up for the way your household uses power.
Talk to us about which vehicles and chargers currently support V2H and V2G, and what it would involve at your property.
EV Charger Installation FAQs
Many electric vehicles can charge from a suitable standard power point using a compatible portable charging cable.
This is slower, but may be sufficient for drivers with modest daily charging needs.
A dedicated EV charger provides faster charging and, depending on the model, features such as scheduling, solar charging and load management.
We assess your vehicle, driving habits and electrical installation to recommend a suitable option.
Charging time depends on your battery size, how much charge you need to add and the charging power your vehicle can accept.
For example, adding a full 70 kWh of energy would take approximately:
| Charging option | Charging power | Calculated charging time |
|---|---|---|
| Standard household power point | 2.3–2.4 kW | 29–31 hours |
| Dedicated single-phase charger | 7 kW | 10 hours |
| Dedicated three-phase charger | 11 kW | 6.4 hours |
| Dedicated three-phase charger | 22 kW | 3.2 hours |
These examples assume a constant charging rate and exclude charging losses. Actual charging will take longer and depends on the vehicle, electrical supply and charger settings.
Your vehicle may accept less power than the charger can supply. For example, a car limited to 11 kW AC charging
won’t charge faster when connected to a 22 kW AC charger.
Most drivers simply top up their daily usage rather than charge from empty to full. If you’re unsure what your vehicle
supports, ask us—we can help match the charger to your car and home.
Yes. An EV charger can operate using electricity from the grid, so solar panels aren’t required.
A compatible charger can also schedule charging during cheaper electricity periods where your tariff offers them.
If you’re considering solar or a battery later, we can factor that into the charger selection.
Yes. Your solar generation can help supply the electricity used to charge your vehicle.
A compatible solar-aware charger can adjust charging to use surplus solar generation, helping reduce grid purchases.
Compatibility, monitoring equipment and minimum charging requirements vary between chargers and vehicles.
We assess your existing solar system and charging needs before recommending an option.
It can be, provided your electricity plan offers a cheaper overnight rate. A compatible charger or vehicle timer can schedule charging for those periods.
Overnight isn’t always the cheapest option. Charging from surplus solar during the day, or using a lower daytime tariff, may offer better value.
We consider your electricity plan and when your vehicle is usually at home to help identify a suitable charging schedule.
Bidirectional charging allows electricity to flow out of a compatible vehicle’s battery as well as into it. Depending on the equipment and installation, this can supply a home or export electricity to the grid.
It requires a compatible vehicle, suitable bidirectional charging equipment and an approved installation. A standard home EV charger doesn’t provide this function, and blackout backup requires specific equipment and configuration.
Some vehicles also offer vehicle-to-load, which can power individual appliances through a suitable outlet or adapter. This is different from supplying your home’s electrical circuits.
Availability depends on your vehicle, equipment and network requirements, which we check before recommending a solution.
